Make a Choice

Technology in Education

Let’s pretend for a minute…

Congratulations! Somewhere, somehow your school found the resources (money) to get individual technology devices for all the students in the school. The question is which device to get. The choices are a netbook, laptop, iPod Touch, iPad, smartphone, or e-reader. Which ONE of these devices do you recommend the school purchase for ALL the students and WHY did you make this choice?

I say iPad’s because they are bigger than iPod touches and you can download books as an app on it. Also, students could buy their own case and take it home on the weekends. I would say the school would have to pay for the apps that have to do with educational value and students could pay for games or apps they want on it.

I also think if you have a laptop it’s not as easy to lose than an ipod. And if you bring ipods and phones into school i think some people would play games all day and nobody would know it. And if you have a laptop it you can hold more memory than an itouch. The thing is that you cant get those helpful school apps, like you would get if you had an ipod. And if your laptop gets hurt the repairing costs more money.

You can get a lot of different games for the ipad. Plus it has good enternet that you can use for projects. I wish we could get iPads at our school.

I would pick one of the iPod touch devices because the touch screen is very nice and works like a computer. But i would most likely pick the iPad because it can be turned sideways to convert into a full keyboard that is just about the size of a computer keyboard. The screen is big enough to show presentations on to a fairly small group. The apps store has thousands of apps for school wise and organisation apps to get all you event and homework assignment and its tell you ahead of time so you can space out how much time you need to work on at each time off the day.

I would have to choose the i pod. this would be a wonderful choice because depending on what kind you have, it would have lots of memory. The i pad might be too big to fit in some of the students backpacks. as for the i pod touch, you could put it in your back pack, pocket, jacket or some kind of spot you could store something in.

If our school got the money to get every student a device, i would probably want a laptop from apple. Its easy to get the internet fast and it doesn’t take long to load. As an itouch, you can still get on the internet but it takes longer to load. All though, itouchs are good for looking something up real quick. I would rather have a laptop then a netbook becuase it could hold more and keep more programs open..

I would recommend Ipads. The Ipad is like giant Ipod touch. It has a lot of good apps that would be great for us to use. I think it might help bring up the average of people getting three`s or fours on the first try. It is a great and fun way to learn and study. Plus the Ipad would be easy to carry around. People would end up having lockers with more space because the Ipad would be able to take the place of binders. So I recommend Ipads.

I think a laptop would be the best idea. They have a larger screen to view resources unlike the iPod and easier to use unlike the ipad. Also they have cameras for you to take pictures and be able to Skype with people something the ereader couldn’t be able to do. They’re high tech and would be able hold more memory unlike the net book. They may be a bit heavier but in the end it’s worth it.

Another reason is because it is a light weight object. And kids care too much and would be too interested in the product so they would not lose it because it would most of the time be in front of there face.

okay. first of all, iPod touches rock. okay my point is clear. iPod touches would be great because phones, you have to pay to text. there is an awesome app i have on my iPod touch that lets you text for FREE. It is called Textfree, and with a modification update, text free with voice. texting would be an awesome, cheap with this app, and convenient. it would help us in so many ways. a laptop gets messed up too often, a iphone you have to pay for stuff, a netbook has little memory, and an ipad is too big when an ipod 4 is smaller more portable, and in every other way the same an an ipad!

I think the iPod touches are the best because you can get eBooks on it and you can also get search engines to look for stuff. You can get Google earth to look at geography. It think the main flaw would be people getting apps that have nothing to do with learning. If we get th fourth generation we could video tape presentations and take pictures. The flaw with fourth generation is that it comes with face time so students might chat with each other while working and get distracted. I don’t feel we should get e-readers because it doesnt do as much.

I think we should all get laptops. Laptops are easier to type on and faster to type with, than ipod touches because the ipod touch doesn’t really have a big screen and is a little difficult to type big essays on. Oppose to the laptop were you have a bigger screen and is easier to type with.

Well I would get Ipads for everyone. They can get apps and are very portable. I also would recommend them because the Laptop takes up a whole lot of energy and space to have. The Ipod touch has a too small screen. The E-reader is mainly for reading. Smart-phones are way to tempting to fool around with. All of these devices have drawbacks but it depends how many they have and the Ipad has the least. Also the ipad can hold a whole lot of stuff. Unlike the ipod and the Smart phones. So overall, I would choose the Ipad.

I would recommend a Laptop or Ipad because they’re bigger so they can’t be easily lost. An Ipod Touch and a smartphone are both small and can be easily lost and replacing them would be expensive. An Ipad and a Laptop would be better because you really can’t lose them, but then again an Ipad can be better than a Laptop because you can easily print to a printer in the area and even pick which one you’ll print to. When with a Laptop you have to set every thing up just for it to use one printer. Really any of the devices can be used, but it all depends on what the price is, how many documents can be saved, and which one is better to carry around.

I think that it should be a smart-phone, because it makes it much easier to talk with friends about school. Also some smartphones are like computers. They work just like laptops and have all of that fitting right in the palm of your hand. They have apps, both social and educational. This would probably make things more exciting for people. And they will help us decide who’s paying any attention, and who isn’t. The grades will reflect this. However e-readers are good for books, rather than the average school stuff. There’s more to school than books. If we were going to get something to do with books get a tablet or iPad. But smartphones can do it all. So my decision is smartphones.

You can type notes and keep track of your homework and projects. iPads are a great tool to have and use for school. Many kids would benefit from having an iPad to use in school, and out of school because many people don’t have computers at home that they can use to type their homework, make their projects, or go on the internet to look information up. iPads would be a great addition to our school.

So it doesnt had 10 pounds to your bookbag, because your bookbag seems to be heavy enough already. You would be able to type all your work and email it to the teacher. Which that would be a way to not use as much paper. I wouldnt say the phone, because most kids here probably already have a phone, so it would be pointless. I say that we should get the IPad. (:

I personally think it’s a waste of money for the school to get technology devices for everyone, because tons of people probably already own these popular devices. Although, there should be a drive to help people who can’t afford a device (which I think a laptop would be the best for school), and they can get one from the school for them to own. If there’s technology, there’s of course, problems with crashing, hacking, not paying attention in class, etc. A laptop would be the most logical because there are tons of things you can do on a computer, without even using internet! Also, I don’t think a computer can replace a teacher, but I think if people have free-choice and/or free time, they should be able to use it. Basically, I think that laptops would be the best choice, mainly because so many people have them already they can bring theirs from home, but if some people can’t afford them, the school can host a drive for them to get one.

The iPad runs smooth compared to a netbook. NETBOOKs are the worst an intel atom and cheap chipset is what you expect for something junky like a netbook. If we were to buy netbooks, we should just buy macs and have a laptop cart igt would be the same price just fewer computers.

You have a full key board and laptops are much easier to work on with multiple pages and/or documents open. There are as many ways to talk to people as a iphone or ipod touches but are easier to keep under control for classes. Ipod touches seem like a useless thing to put in schools, the screens are to small to do much on and aren’t helpful when it comes to needing to use Word. Word is one of the most useful things to have access to because you can write papers and make tables, the basics for any class

Laptops are fairly easy to carry around and are a very good resource because it does things that some other electronic devices may not have the ability to do. I also think that laptops would be better than iPods because iPods have apps that some irresponsible children may be tempted to play in class, I understand that there are many games that can be played on the computer, but iPods are more discreet as where laptops are more easily seen. I also think that laptops would be a lot quicker, especially when it comes to typing essays and papers, because iPods are smaller and sometimes much harder to type on. I believe that many other students will agree with me when I saw laptops are the best choice for our school.

I would recommend getting a laptop for all students. I think a laptop would be most helpful because they can be used in many ways. Getting new and nice laptops would make it easier to get work done and to manage it because you don’t have to worry about not having enough mouses or the keyboards not working. Having your own personal laptop you don’t have to worry about your files being deleted or just not having a computer to use. At the same time getting the nice laptops would be expensive but they would last longer, be faster, and you can carry it around where ever you go. A laptop would be the best choice because everyone would have a computer to use and wouldn’t have to worry about their files being deleted or having a slow computer. That is why I think a laptop would be the best choice for students to have.

I think that the school would be best with Ipads. Ipads are portable enough to be used anywhere and are better suited for comfort which is a disadvantage of some laptops. They are also large enough so that people couldn’t just hide them and do things inappropriate for school. They also don’t have to be on plans like phones. The biggest disadvantage of the Ipad is that you have to pay to get alot of the useful apps.

I think the best device would be the ipad. The ipads would be a great way to take notes and email our work into the teacher. The ipad is light weight and would keep students from carrying heavy notebooks around. I think the ipod touch is the worst idea because the screen is so small and it would be harder to type notes in a short amount of time. The phones would be good but there would be problems with texting.

Its battery life is good for up to 36 hours and it has all tyhe features that a regular computer has plus more. Also it has snow leopard which is rated one of the fastest operating systems in the world. It also has things like imovie which not only can you watch movies on it you can also edit and make movies on it.

I reccomend that the school purchases netbooks for all. Netbooks are almost fully functional laptops, but are much smaller in size and less expensive. Our school also already has much of the software needed for our work on the netbooks, whereas for a device such as the iPod Touch or an iPad, we would have to purchase new software and have to install the software on each individually, as they cannot connect to a broader server. iPads also do not have external hard drive capability, so transfering data would be a bit more difficult. Also, while the iPad does have a nice virtual keyboard, a real keyboard is the easiest way to type.

I think we should all get iPads. I say this because they are faster than an iPod touch, but more portable than a computer. They also have a camera and kids couldn’t text during class. I honestly think netbooks are pieces of junk and laptops are not all that portable. I also prefer products made by Apple/Macintosh, but this school wastes a lot of money of Activboards rather than individual items like the iPad, therefor we could not afford a macbook. They are also just $499 (cheaper than a laptop). iPad is the best choice.

I would want to have a iPad. I would get the second generation. With the iPod Touch, the only thing wrong about it is the screen size. The only problem for me with the smartphone, no matter how bad I want one, it would distract me and run up a bill. I would get a laptop, but the PC’s I already use are fine. I would want an iPad because of its efficiency and the size of it in general. Everything has its place on an iPad. I know what you are thinking, a laptop provides the same thing. But, for me, an iPad would be a better storage place for everything, I would know where everything is. Also, I enjoy the touchscreen. And I know that there are touchscreen laptops, but I would want an iPad for the apps, the storage, and the touchscreen, not that I wouldn’t mind having a laptop or any of the other choices.

Well I have two different beliefs/Sides about this topic actually three. First off i think that iPod touches would be great for school use because i think that they are easy to transport and a small thing to keep up with. Although Because of their size it would also b able to loose! Thats why the password part of the itouch comes in handy, But the only way that would work would be if everyone kept their passwords very secret but the teachers probable have to know the password. Also if the teacher knows your password they more than likely will tell your parents, which personally is a major invasion of privacy. My second opinion is the laptop i think laptops would be great. They would be easy to transport and very easy to keep up with. Another thing is laptops also have the locking part to it, Although i still have the same opinion about the whole locking thing as before. I think my final decision is the ipad 2 because i was all the things that an itouch has and also a computer. Another thing i find important is its not huge and it’s not tiny. Overall i think that the best choice is the ipad2 it will make a big difference our learning and our lockers. 🙂

I feel this way because an i touch could be to small for some students with glasses and the students could be downloading game apps to play on during class which i am sure is not what teachers want. i pads are the exact same kids could be doing what they are not supposed to do on them like playing games. e readers would be good for English but with an e reader you can’t go online and get answers as easily or go on google earth for social studies. Smart phones are definitely not the best way to go you can download apps and make phone calls during class that is also something teachers would not want to have happen. This is why i think that a laptop would be the best direction to take.

I would say the i Pad, because they have bigger screens to type. If kids get big smartphones they could drop them in water, plus the cost of a plain. If they get laptops like the high schoolers do they would go on the internet and get off-track in class. The Netbook doesn’t do as much as a laptop is able to do.I think i pads are the best choice because of the fact that the kids could use the app store to download educational games, even though they could download an app not related to school at all like angry birds, they could go to a website that the teachers on so they can actually see what is going on, because some kids understand things if they look at is them selves. So we can make sure people don’t go on Facebook and all that stuff, the school can do what they do for the computer, they can make the i prism thing available for computers.

On the shop you can go to the shop.In the shop, you can buy books, magazines, and newspapers. but in a way, since I already have one, I would want a labtop too, rather than an e-reader. On the labtop you can use Microsoft office, and actually write things down. Plus, you can go on the internet.

It lets the kids have the freedom of using different apps to help their skills improve in all subjects. It would be useless to get the ITouch because the IPad is a bigger, better version of that. You can always get people to donate money, or find other ways to raise money to get them.

I’d agree because it is just as big as an iPad, you can have more windows open, but it’s not any easier to stay on task with a computer because it’s just as tempting to get on the internet as it is to use other apps when your not supposed to. Also, on a computer, it might take more time and you might not be able to get to some of the same programs as on the iPad. It’s easier to get apps and have them whenever you need them, then constantly typing in the same thing over and over and over again.

The main difference is, it is smaller. The screen is harder to see on. On an Ipad, it would be a bigger screen so much easier to interact on. The choices given are so popular and very advance pieces of technology in the technical world, that for me it is hard to pick one. But since I have to choose one I would recommend the i-Pad. One reason is because it’s touchscreen (something commonly used in teen society) and it is very light weight. By it being light wait and easy to carry its not such a hassle for students to navigate around with and use. You can also have numerous apps which can help with a task that may enhance the students understanding ability on that topic. So I believe the i-Pad has plenty to offer and its the greatest choice.

I think we should deffinetly get smarphones. I have had a smartphone before, and they are really nice. You can get on the internet wherever you go. You can text, surf the web, do emails, and get apps from the Market, or App store to get even more possibilities. You can have 3G coveage everywhere and not have to worry about wifi conection. Also if your wifi connection at school is very strong then you can switch from 3G to wifi in seconds. If you only have wifi than you dont have the portable capabilities. The Ipad is just really big and is not portable like a smartphone. The smartphone will fit in your pocket and can do even more than you can on anything else. Also the smartphone is more advanced. The ipad has only been out for a year, the smartphone has been out way longer.

I recommend that the school purchase the iPad for every student. My reason for this is that you can do everything on there that you want you can even type so you wouldn’t need a computer. Also you can go on the Internet so you still wouldn’t need a computer. But one bad thing about this is that it costs a lot of money so you would have to have an very big fund raiser. Also an iPod touch would be too small and it wouldn’t be as easy to use. But on an iPad you can see everything as easily as you can on a computer screen. Well those are my reasons for why the school should buy an iPad for every student.

I think that we should get smartphones because the teacher could text the student and ask them questions and the student could text back and answer the question. Plus if we get smartphones we could text ourself the homework assignments, and I’m pretty sure that more students would start to do there homework if they were notified by a text. I know that I would do my homework if I were notified by a text.

    Reply

    • JoAnna J Says:

But, if you text the question, other students wouldn’t learn from other kids’ mistakes. The whole point of talking to students on questions outloud is for other students, as well as the student who was asked the question, to learn if the answer said was wrong. Instead of the teacher going over the same mistake/question twenty or more times, mostly, the teacher only has to go over it 1-4 times depending on the students listening. Also, it would be way harder to text all of the students the answer/question than to just say the answer aloud. Even if the text itself had spaces for more that one person to get the text, there wouldn’t be 20 spots for receptants.

If students could have access to any device, it should be an IPad. I have the IPad two at home, and there is a lot of things that can be done with it. The IPad combines a Mac, a phone, and an iPod. You can type through pages and keynote, that’s like Word and PowerPoint. While you’re typing, you can listen to music. The IPad also has IBooks where you can read any book you want. The IPad is a small computer that is easy to learn how to work. IPad’s are the devices all students should get!

I would probably recommend the IPad, because of many reasons. I would choose this, because it is very similar to a Ipod and a Laptop, so you can use it for many different things, besides a Ipod or Laptop. It has some really good apps for it, and you can use it for typing too. Laptops, aren’t really as important, because you dont have apps that you can use on them, they are just mainly there for internet use. Smartphones aren’t helpful for anything except using certain apps and texting your answer into the teacher. If you get caught text anyone else, you will get it taken away too. E- Readers are only useful for reading, so you cant use them all of the time. Netbooks, are just smaller sized computers, and once again, computers are really only useful for internet use. Thats why I think the IPad is the most useful, because you can use it for more than one thing, which is Internet, Apps, Calculator, Music, etc.

Ipads are just enlarged itouches and netbooks are just smaller laptops, there are books in our class rooms. I just don’t think that netbook, laptop, iPad, smartphone, or e-reader would fit the job like an itouch. Netbooks and Laptops just allow you to go on the web. E-reader just allows you to read books. I would recommend that the school should get netbooks. Because, I would normally recommend laptops, but the cheapest laptop you can probably get is around five hundred dollars. And netbooks are just like tiny laptops. I’ve seen a netbook that went for about two hundred dollars. So, it saves the school a lot of money when looking for hand-held devices for five hundred children. But, you can get an iPod Touch for around the same price as the netbook.

I made this choice because i have heard that iPads are a good tool to use. they could be very effecient in each classes and help you too. It would apply to all classes and make everything easy for you if you had a iPad. I think that an Ipad would be a good device in school? Whos with me?

i think the school should choose the ipad. It is pretty lightweight and easy to carry to class. You can also get a number of apps to help with every subject. Also, i do not think we need a netbook or laptop because we already have computers for other use. I think the ipad is very kid friendly and most would agree that the ipad is the best choice. I believe that the ipad is universal and can be used for any school activity. The ipad is the best choice.

For math you could use it as a calculator and in Language Arts you could use it as a book to read. I think a Ipad is better than a laptop because it has better technology like reading a book off it.

People would be texting instead of doing work.

The device i would recommend to the school to get all students would be the iPad. It is be enough to put to hands on it so there would be less people dropping them. It has a big screen so it is easier to type on and do more educational things. Also with that big screen it is easier for a teacher to see what the student is doing. The iPad is touch screen so it is more user friendly to a student. Also the iPad is the newest thing out there so it would probably have the best technology for a student to use.

I would recommend iPad. I would recommend them because they are easy for students to carry this technology in the school or take it home. You can get all different apps to helpful learn more or do things that you not good at. they aren’t so big or so small. You can access to the internet with them. Actually you can a lot of things with them. Students also can learn a lot of things with them. Also you can block things for students to don’t go there or some like that.

I think that the school should buy iPads. iPads have many applications on them that would benefit learning. Also the screen is bigger than iPod Touches. Students can get the interactive learning that they need. When you have an iPad you can also buy a keyboard to go along with it, so it would be like a laptop just better. iPads are kind of the new things out and as technology progresses kids need to be able to learn how to use technology. iPads would be a great way to teach. Also if everyone had an iPad, you could save paper. Kids could get their worksheets from their teaches via email and then once they are done the kids could email them back to their teachers. Buying iPads would be very beneficial because of the learning applications and saving the paper (which is also saving us money).

There are multiple apps that you can get for the iPad that you cannot get on a laptop. They are a lot more portable than a laptop, but they have more features than the as easily portable netbook. You can surf the web, read books, make diagrams, and much more on th iPad. I would chose the iPad because I think that it is the most sufficient for the students needs at Voyager Academy.

I would say that a laptop would be the best because it can do all the things an i touch can. With and e reader books are more expensive than paper back. An i pad would be ok but viewing the full screen and typing would be difficult because the key pad almost covers the screen. The smart phone would be the most expensive option because kids would text and play games, just like they found out how to do on calculators, but this time it would actually cost money. I think the laptop would be the best because that way when a student needs to pull up a file it they will know exactly where it is. If everyone had a laptop we could eliminate the paper in the school, with each teacher having electronic home work. Also there would never be a shortage of computers for projects

I haven’t seen an iPad before, but I’ve heard that it has really helpful apps, too. It would be easier to organize soft copies than hard copies. These would be easy to carry and I’m sure apps would help some students with their work. If a student breaks, loses, or steals the iPad they should pay the school back. The reason I chose the iPod over the iPod touch over the iPad is because I think that having Five hundred dollar equipment might get a little distracting. The other thing about the iPod touch is that more and more people are getting iPod touches, meaning that more people would be able to work with the iPod touch at school. The iPod touch also has a potential of being distracting and kids might do the wrong thing.

Now i realize dat the 1 da school will give will probably block off anything non-school related. Still, we can get school related things on our own iPod. that is only if we choose to. also, now that i think about, the parents and the students will probably be asked, number one: to make an interest moneywise, and if the parent r okay with the students having it. i would love to have something like this, but the way kids r now being clumsy and all, it’s rediculous.

I would like to have the iPod Touches because they have great apps like for instance there are ones where kids can talk to their teachers to ask questions about homework, teachers can contact each other and students in fourth grade will be able to practice their spelling and students in middle and fifth grades can learn and practice what they learned in school. I would not recommend the laptops because there is no useful apps on them. I have a laptop and the only school related thing I can do on it is go on Microsoft Word or PowerPoint or check the school’s website. On the iPod Touches we could get WiFi and then be able to check the school’s website too. Lastly, I have a question for the laptop group… have you found out any apps students could do on the laptop and if there is do students have to go on the internet and search them when ever they want to use them? Also, I really like touch screen things because they are very cool and fun!

Well the most direct definition is (from wikipedia) : ‘An e-book reader is similar in form to a tablet computer. A tablet computer typically has a faster screen capable of higher refresh rates which makes them more suitable for interaction. The main advantages of e-book readers are better readability of their screens especially in bright sunlight and longer battery life. This is achieved by using electronic paper technology to display content to readers.
Any device that can display text on a screen can act as an e-book reader, but without the advantages of the e-paper technology.’
