iPod Touch Apps for Education

March 25, 2011

Technology in Education

Do you have or know someone who has an iPod Touch? If so, does that iPod Touch have on it an app that could be very useful in school? What is that app?

The great thing about apps is that they cost little to nothing to put on an iPod Touch, and there are so many of them to choose from. Did you know that instead of buying an expensive calculator there are free apps that turn your iPod Touch into that same expensive calculator saving you and your parents money?!?! Take a look at 50 of the most popular education apps for the iPod Touch using the link below. Select any of the apps from the list (or choose a different education app if you know of another one not listed), and comment how that app could have helped you with a particular project or assignment you’ve done in the past. For example, if I’m a terrible speller and have to write a paper for Language Arts class, I could have used the Miss Spell app to learn how to correctly spell the most commonly misspelled words. Because the Miss Spell app works like a game, learning to better spell would have been fun for me.

The most popular education apps list is available here….http://www.utechtips.com/2009/11/03/50-educational-apps-for-the-ipod-touch/.

i think that we should use an Iphone. we would get to use the internet, Apps for school, Pics, we can also look up books to buy it. so we dont need the netbook or whatever. We can use the iPhone in math, Science Social Studies and L.A. We also might be able to use it in core connections. We can use the awesome Miss Spell app for L.A. Theres so many posibilities for an Iphone.

Like i’ve said before, i think it’s a great idea to use Ipod touches for school related reasons! And it does save money, because you don’t have to go out and buy a 100 dollar calculator, instead you can just download an app for 1 dollar, or a 1 dollar and 99 cent. This application lets you use that 100 dollar calculator for less money! And I find the apps for History, and spanish very helpful, and i have used them many times on my ipod touch!

    App: Google Earth
    Price: Free
What it is: Excellent iPod Touch version of the desktop programme created by Google. Absolutely awesome.
This app would be really helpful in that tech/social studies Europe project we did, because we could do some of the project at home on our devices. We could also use if for the current social studies project on South America.

App: History: Maps of the world
    Price: Free
What it is:View historical maps of the world.
This will also help with social studies, when we were doing our europe project.

I think that the most helpful app for school would be the Advanced Calculator. I like this app because you could use it for all subjects. Especially math. I am kind of struggling in math and i would like to be able to use that app in Math class. Also you can use it in science to find like volume and density and other stuff. So over all i would think that the Advanced Calculator app would be the most helpful with schoolwork.

In could take it home and study over everything for a guiz or I could use it to just look over my notes. If I had this I would havegotten a better grade in that class. Maybe on that app it would have pictures to look at and I am sort of a visual person.

I have an iPod Touch. On that iPod Touch, I have Google Earth. Google Earth is a very cool app and is just like the Google Earth on the computer! I can find any place in the world on there.

I have tried the free version of Geared. It is a very cool problem-solving app. You drag gears and try to get a little gear near the top to spin. There are many other cool educational apps like Google Translator. I can translate words from Spanish to English and English to Spanish. The only downside of this app is that you need internet for it. All of these apps are very cool and useful apps.

Well, my bro has a touch. and he has a notepad app, which is really good for small notes. Also my mom has an app for voice recording. That could help to know what you’re supposed to do. and the teacher’s EXACT words. Sometimes i cant remember that kinda stuff. So the voice recording app is really good for that. I also used that for remembering music that my fiddle teacher gave me. since it wasn’t on paper, so i just used the voice recorder. it works by fust recording anything. She also set us up an account for cozi for daily reminders and stuff. So i could just put my homework on it and it would remind me on G mail. So the best three apps to use are: voice recording, notepad, and cozi.

The App that i would probably use would be the Story Kit, because with my social studies teacher you typr up papers almost once a week. With being able to add pictures it would make it to where you could be riding somewhere and you have your ipod touch and you could work on the story/paper that my social studies teacher asked for. Plus for all the other classes like Science or L.A. it would be very helpful.

I’ve done many projects on historical places in the world, and I’ve had to look up maps on Google Images often, and I’m not always sure if they’re accurate or not. This app would help me to find all of the information I needed for my projects.

Another app to be used is the iFirst Aid so we can also know how to someone if were caught up in trouble. Another app we can use for education is the basic math so we can easily study for math at home.

There are many different types of apps that help many different people and some things work better than others for those people…

This is a good activity for us (6th 7th and 8th) graders to do. For me i know that the internet is where i find most of my things. So Google or Bing would be a great app for me to find information for projects, homework, etc.

Many kids that have the iPhone’s and iPod’s have many apps to choose from and also there would be apps like world wiki and search engines and things that you could find information for things quickly.

This is just some of the things that i use in daily life and i think that if we have this stuff on our phones and iPod’s and other things like that and we could use for just those things in school then i think that we could have better grades and people would improve their skills and this i think would also help kids do better work in class.

If there is a big test coming up you could get on the app and study for it so you can make a better grade. Studing is ussally boring, but if kids could use this app the students would probably like it more then siting down and reading over worksheets. This could make learning a lot mre fun(:

I also think that the basic math app would’ve been really good. I think that this would help with what were learning in algebra. You need to know your multiplication tables and I stink at those. I now wish that I could have this app, I don’t have an iTouch.

The Ipod Touch is wonderful peice of hardware. The model with an A5 (if they would put a dual core processor for such limted battery) would uber fast. I would want it to have thicker body and a 4 to a 4.5 inch screen too. But on the topic of Ipod Touches, they are portable and the UI is easy to use. But IOS 5.0 should allow people to acess an image of “their ipod touch” on the sever so that they save things. That would help schools utilize the ipod touch.

My favorite app is the Wolfram Algebra App. Although i cannot use it in school, :(, it helps me a lot at home when i am trying to do homework, or just looking over a test. I strongly encourage others taking algebra to buy this app. It has helped me figure out products, solutions, and all that good stuff. I ❀ this app. It is $1.99 and it would be very helpful in school. It is like a calculator, but it gives the explanations for the answer. You can simplify equations, find square roots, and even graph equations. It's the ultimate calculator teacher.

This app would be helpful because in school because in math class we are sometimes asked to convent miles to inches or what have you. It would be easier to do this is I would have this app on my Ipod Touch and able to use it in class. Also the app Number Line would be helpful to have on an Ipod. Because it helps order decimals, fractions, etc. This would be helpful in math class when working with decimals or fractions. I generally do excellently in school and easily learn almost all subjects (I don’t intentually want to sound conceded) the one subject I truly lack skills in though is geography. Geography has always been my worst subject. I know how to read a map I just don’t easily remeber a map. This would have easily given me an upperhand 2 years ago when I had a project about researchin a country and I couldn’t tell where the capital was so I got points off.

I think the free book app would be the best to have because a lot more people would read if they had an easy way to read. Peoples carry ipods and phones everywhere with them, so carrying a book everywhere would be ten times easier. Free books would also help, you don’t have to buy them or borrow them from the library and worry about getting them returned on time. No late fees. Reading is something everyone should do more often and if books are light weight and at our finger tips all the times then more people would read.

I think one app that would have been helpful at the beginning of the year, would be the ‘Spanish Tutor’ app. Back when we had Spanish, all we had to her was the teacher talking and we never learned how to say things in Spanish at our own pace. I have this app my-self and it has quizzes and it teaches you phrases, and much much more. This app would have been helpful because say as if we got a Mexican student, s/he would feel left out because no one would speak the langue they speak. Also in one of our classes we worked with problems in Spanish, so we diffidently had to remember the numbers, but luckily the teacher gave us notes. There are many ways people can use this app in school, and i just named a few of the many many more out three.

So, the app that really looked helpful to me and proble many others is the spell check app. I really thinnk this would help people with their reports and their spelling in genereal. People using this app would be able to see what word they spelled wrong, how to fix it and then remember the correct spelling for the next time they use it. Now I know that spell check is on every old computer but if you have the microsoft word app on you ipod touch or iphone then you might be more interested in writing up a report. Also you would be able to cary your reports were ever you go but you have the problem with losing your itouch which is just as bad as losing you pappers in class. Another thing using your itouch and it’s your’s so you don’t share it with friends even if its to have a friend look over something if you are you should then print it off. Finaly i think that it is a great idea to have your itouch or iphone but they can be a bad thing as well! (:

I have an app on my I-phone, that’s called ROCKET MATH. It’s were you build a rocket (virtualy) then launch it. when you’re up in spacce you have to tap all the multiples of 9 or7 and so on. you earn money to decorate you’re rocket by doing multiplication tables or dividing, or addition and subtraction. It sounds kind of babyish, but it’s really fun. I think this could help people with there multiplycation tables. I’ve heard so many teachers complain about kids not knowing them… so this could help!!

i think the best ipod educational app is the Spanish Touter app. This app is a all free spanish learning app that uses study tools like flashcards puzzles and writing to teach you spanish. The spanish Touter app is a big help for schools that are teaching Spanish. Not only is it educational but fun students would rather type the write and theyed rather use there ipod instead of flashcards. The last thing I think is great is the organization of the app instead of keeping up with 30 flash cards you can just keep up with one ipod. It makes it easy for use to learn and teachers to teach.

But there are some negative ways of using ipod touches. You can get apps like facebook, texting, and apps that aren’t even related to school. a teacher might be in the middle of a lesson and there is a kid with there ipod touch out on facebook and even texting another student. But there are some good ways to like learning apps like this article describes. I think that the number line, the basic, the stanza and the isign lite are really good apps. The reason is because especially in sixth grade we learn a lot about percentages, dcimals and fractions, so the number line app would be great for that purpose. For kids in second, third, fourth and fifth, the basic would be really good for them because they’re really beginning to learn all of that stuff because in middle school they’re gonna need to use it for other things. So that app would be perfect fo them. The stanza is really good because kids would probably enjoy reading off an ipod especially with all the reading to do in sixth grade. Last but not least the isign. I personally think it’s a good ap because it seems cool to be able to learn sign language in a fun. It’ll help because depending on what you want your career to be, you might have to communicate with someone that is deaf and has to use sign language. All these would definetly help us in school.

Anyway, I have three apps that i use all the time, i really used one last night. that one was a dictionary. for math at home im to lazy to get out my calculater, so i use my app. when we had spanish, i used a spanish to english and a english to spanish app. At home when im not using the apps, im listoning to music. music helps me consentrate b/c when it is really quiet, my ears start ringing and it gets hard to think. over all, this would be a good idea. for the people that are saying people will play on other apps, they won’t be able to get the apps because of the password that you have to put in to buy the apps. so no Angry Birds!

It help you to learn about the units of measurement, which I have trouble learning about. It would have been good for me to use when we were in math or science call and doing task where you have to measure things, or put something into units. It seems like all of these apps could really help anyone in school.

Excellent little app which will quickly show you any unit (area, temperature, length and weight, to name a few) in most other units, e.g. for Length it shows you Miles, Nautical Miles, Yard, Foot, Inch, Kilometre & Metre. The perfect app to illustrate why we should think about whether we need to spend time teaching our kids this stuff when it does it for us so quickly…

You can use the Calculator app for math problems, you can use the word check app for writing papers or something, and even the English-Chinese dictionary so you can learn Chinese! Especially for younger grades, its even BETTER because they can utilize simple apps like multiplication tables and counting apps/ games that they have apps for. So all in all, the educational apps are very good for schools and i think schools will prosper from them.

Now these apps…yes they are free, yes we can download them but would students really use them?? Some apps that cost $1.00 might be more enteresting then the ones that are free. Teachers could have asignments that you have to use certain apps that way kids will use them. I personaly like the apps touch chords, and Miss Spell. In music class i know I have trouble with what chord is what and which note is what so this could help me. I would love to think that you could use the apps on the iPod to learn then to use the same old learning method that is used almost every year. This would add a fun twist to learning that would really get kids excited about learning. There are apps like dictionary.com where you can look for the definition for any word fast without flipping through those many pages of a regular dictionary. I do think that things like calculators are better to buy because they have all these cool functions on it that an iPod couldn’t have like graphing. I do think that iPods would be cool to use but we should be selective on how we use them. Many kids will enjoy this method a lot more than what we are using now.

I would like the spelling app to because I misspell words all the time when I type because I sometimes hit the wrong key… They should allow itouches because the itouch would help me on my future in math because my mom would not like to pay a lot of money for a calculator so the app is the solution.

I could have really used the Spanish Tutor app. I remember having to take spanish and it was hard to focus. The spanish tutor app would really help. My best friend has an Ipod Touch and we have alot of fun on it. Kids these days spend alot of time on ipods and ipads. I think that we should have these apps because we are always on those electronics anyway, so why not use them as an educational purpose. I also like the idea of the Stanza app. With all those books on there I’m in heaven. I’m always loosing books and it’s hard to keep up with them all. If I had the app, they would all be in the same place. Back to my origional point, if we are all on ipods, and we have the educational apps, then we could get more out of it. I think it’s a great idea to have them in school, but I think it could all be monitered on what is downloaded. Therefore, we would still have fun with the Ipod Touches, but get educational use out of it. If we had schoolwork on it, it would also reduce the space needed for supplies such as binders and workbooks.

It would be cool to have iPod’s in school. Evan through it was made for entertainment, it could be turned into a teacher’s favorite tool. I would become a little bit distracting at time, but with strict rules it cam be turned into learning. Having iPod’s at voyager, i think would help this school out! I hope we can get iPod’s in our school.

I think in some ways it might be good to use them in school, but also be bad at the same time. I think it would be good because you would be learning and using it for school and work. The bad thing is that people would want to playon them and not do there work but the teachers would block that. The reason i say its bad is because it would be a waste of money. Why go and buy alot and spend thousands on them when you already have comupters. This is just stuff that everybody wants because they think they will be able to play on them. Even some of the teachers think its good, and some think its bad. I just think it would be a waste of money cause we already have computers and you will do the same on the computers as you would on the Ipods. The only think i think would be good to have them for is that you can carry them around with you. But then everybody would try to steel them so i think we should just stick with the computers.

The only reason why i wouldn’t want to use it at school is because the student would get off task with other apps, when they are supposed to be doing their work. I think that it would be very educational, and help a lot of people who might not understand something. Such as something that they might be doing in math, or social studies. The calculator is a very useful app. People who might not have a lot of money would not be able to afford an expensive calculator could buy one for as low as six dollars on the i pod. Another app is the Miss spell. It helps you learn to spell and make your paper more readable. There are many different apps that are educational. I would love to have I pod touches at school!

I used to have a I-Pod Touch but I lost it. But I know many people with I-Pod Touches. I wish I didn’t lose mine.
It sure would be a lot easier to carry an I-Pod Touch in my pocket than a book bag that weighs twenty pounds. Also I think more kids would start doing their homework more often because they will find homework fun or easier. I know I sure would!

If we have I-Pod there could be a app where you could see your homework that your teacher posted and you would know all of your homework. It would be much easier! Also there could be a MY HOMEWORK app where you could type in your homework. Even though I would probably just look at what the teachers have posted!(:

I do have an iPod touch. I have a few apps that are translators, help you spell, or they are a map. The app I found that could help in school is the Stanza app. We could use this app to read off of instead of wasting money to buy the books. The app has over 50,000 books so a lot of the books we would read, we wouldn’t have to pay for. Also the app is free, so we wouldn’t have to pay for that either. By using this app, we would also help the environment because we are not using paper, so it’s not cutting down trees. Stanza would help not only us, but the environment.

I have an ipod touch, but i dont bring it to school in fear of it getting broken or stolen. some of these apps are useful such as the Spanish teacher app or the ereader app, but then, how many kids could afford these ipods? would they really use them for school or would they use the games on there. it would be really cool to use my ipod and school and not get it taken away, but can we trust that the students wouldnt use it for games?

Maybe the school could give us a grant since they would be used for education. We could also leave the iPods here instead of taking them home.

I don’t think a lot of people would want to leave their iPods here. They would want to take them home and use them at home. If they got it in the first place I’m almost positive the first thought they had wasn’t “Hey I can use this for school!!”

I do not have an i-pod touch but I do have a lot of friends that do have some. If I do get an i-pod touch some of the apps that would be really helpful in school would be the World Wiki, Google Earth and Brain Blaze Divide. World Wiki would be helpful in social studies because it gives you demographic information on most of the countries in the u.s and the Google Earth app will also help me find information on different countries and states. The Brain Blaze Divide app gives you a set of division problems that you can do and when you finish them you unlock another level. This would be good for me because I am not to good with division and multiplication.

I think that educational apps for the itouch is really cool. Like for example the calculator thing. Instead of buying the really expensive one for like $50 you can just get the app on your itouch for probably about $5 or something like that. I also think the Miss Spell app is really cool. I am kind of a bad speller. Maybe I can use it if I had an itouch. I think the Spanish tutor app thing is really cool too. I have a hard time learning Spanish. If I had an itouch I think it could really help me. On the Spanish tutor app you can make flashcards and memorize Spanish terms. You can also write like on a white board and do a lot of games where you have to figure out words in Spanish.

Its dark at a campsite and you need a flashlight. How about pulling out your iPod?! I know a person who has this GREAT app called the flashlight app. You can change the color of the light and decide how bright or dull it is. It acts allot like a real flashlight only its allot wider AND it helps you to see in the dark better all at the same time! Only you shouldn’t stair at the light to long or it could hurt your eyes. Yikes.

I think that it is better to buy a calculator app for .99 cents rather than 99.99 dollars. For example the Miss Spell app would be useful for if you have to write in your journal so you don’t ‘miss spell’ something. Another example would be the default calculator app, it has a built in science calculator and you can do more thing that you could ever imagine, all you have to do is tilt the screen. Some apps that I use for references are the Dictionary app, where you can type in the word and find the definitions in seconds or speak into it if you don’t know how to spell it (if you have a speaker in your iPad/iPod/iPhone). Another app is the Google mobile app, it is an app for on the go research where you can search for anything and get results in under 5 seconds, or if you are multi-tasking you can voice search to which comes out to be 95% accurate. (most of the time)

Story kit you can make a story book by writing text of just drawing on the screen with your finger. First aid you can learn how to do CPR and all kinds of other life saving abiliities with this app for any age group. This is Perfect for Babysitting!

I can use a lot of these apps. Plus, the highest one is probably only 99 cents. It’s a great program. I have two apps that I use at home on my iPod touch. They’re kind of the same. They are Documents and Documents lite. I can type stories on there and it’ll spell check it or I can email it to a teacher. On the full version you can draw pictures, for Art class.I use those when the computer is being used. You can also make files for subjects and put your work in the file. Some other apps include, iBooks, Kindle, Nook, and a ton more! When you go to the app store in the Categories section. Near the bottom is a whole section of education apps. Free and 99 cent ones. I like the education apps!!!!

I thought that the mini piano and the drum kit were both awesome. The only thing is that I don’t know how much you could learn from them. For people trying to play piano, they would be able to practice in the car. Both of these apps you could use in music, as long as you don’t break the ipod with the drum kit. With drums you have a tendency to try to slam the drumsticks down on the snare drum, but you wouldn’t want to hit the screen to hard. The piano app works like a piano, and seems pretty realistic. the drum kit, is pretty basic and doesn’t really need explaining.

The apps on the list looked really interseting. Some of them I think I would even use to study for my classes. It could defitily help with your grades. Technology can be addicting to teenage kids, so parents get them some education apps on your kids touches. They can make you proud and go to Harvard!

Some apps i would use is the Math app, Miss Spell , Reading apps, World Map, Google Earth, Make a Face. These seem usefull.

i do already have an ipod touch, and i know how fun it is to be on. i would love to be able to switch the rules around and bring to school learn. One solution for being able is this: if someone needs a computer, and there are only 3 computer per room, if we ipods at school, then, we could google it with that. really simple, butno teacher is willing to let us prove it. They the kids will not be paying attention anymore, that some of them will listen to music and do other things. I do agree with some poeple that take advantage of it, but if they let us try it, they will realize it’s mostly not true. Some of them need to let their guard dow.
