7 Gadgets that Won’t Be Around in 2020?

October 19, 2011

Tech News

According to writer Seth Fiegerman of the financial website MainStreet, there are seven tech gadgets that we aren’t likely to see many of in the year 2020.  Those items are GPS navigation systems (the standalone, single function kind like you’re likely to find attached to the windshield of a car), E-Readers (a HUGE disappointment to me personally…I JUST got one of these things!), cell phones that aren’t smartphones, digital cameras (not the high quality professional kind, but more basic low-end point-and-shoot cameras), DVD players, CDs and DVDs (recordable), and (gasp!) video game consoles!  Of course the argument is that smartphones and better tablet computers are going to replace most of these tech items.  Don’t get me wrong…I agree that multi-function items like iPhones that can take pictures, videos, have built-in GPS systems, and oh yeah, are also phones are the way to go, but the year 2020 is not that far away.  Will my new, beloved E-Reader cease to be relevant in just a few short years?

Is it just me or do you guys think that maybe at least SOME of the gadgets mentioned may still have a place in society in 2020, or is Mr. Fiegerman right?  Do you own any of these tech items, and if so, how often do you use them….enough to think they may still be useful in 2020?  If you agree, why?  Before commenting, read the full article here (pay special attention to the gaming consoles section), then respond thoughtfully.

I think that Ipads can do everything a e-reader,camera and even some DVD players. But i think that we still need some of these things because if you don’t want to carry around a big bulky Ipad when you just could pull out a handheld camera or maybe a e-reader because those Ipad are not light and if you drop them the screen will crack or it might just freeze up.Also i have a kindle and i dropped it once and then i had to get a new one!!!!

I think that this article could be true.If technology keeps advancing like it is right know most of our technology will be gone . I love my Wii ,but in a couple years it could be gone because of the TV having built in games . I really hope that doesn’t happen because I like taking pictures with a camera over a phone because it comes out blurry on a phone. But maybe phone cameras will get better. My iPad does not have a camera so I hope they don’t get rid of cameras. Will you be sad when are technology is gone ?

How could this be! How could be people get rid of this stuff. I think that this is not a good idea. The reason is because what if one day of the new “smart tv” gets broke and because it has so many features it will cost a fortune to replace it. Also why would they get rid of the xbox their industry is booming. I don’t belive that they are getting rid if these things.

But I dont care about the other ones. I think the ones i didn’t list are to old to still be around. I hope some are still around really bad. Because I kinda want an i pad but if something eles comes around and is better than a i pad then I would want that. 🙂

I dont have i phone or e reader. I do belive dvd players will be gone because of netflix and redbox or other stuff like that. I dont believe the phones will be gone because some cant afford fancy i phone and ipads. GPS’s might go because of better technology; i heard on the radio about GPS shoes, crazy but awesome. Game consoles I dont think will disapear because of money problems and 2020 is not too far away. The guy that wrote this is not right most of these will still be here, but I do enjoy better technology.

I do think that the Wii might not be there but others will still be around.I also think there will be at least some version of a e-reader. and the smart phone will not be the only phone.i think this guy i partly right but not completly.

I think that this will be good in many ways but then again bad in others. Like if you are a person who likes xobx then this may not be a problem because xbox is always going to be on the top of the games and they keep evolving getting better and better. Therefore xbox might stay, or on the other hand xbox creators may run outta things to create. For the other things such as the kendle and e readers and cameras ect. they will be around but just in different ways so dont be scared it just evualvation.

Most younger people have phones that are not smartphones. I mean who would want to take their nice camera (like the ones photographers have) on a trip were you might lose it!! I wouldn’t, I would want a small little camera that I could take some quick pics of. Not one that takes for ever to pack up.

I really don’t get e readers. I mean seriously it is the exact something as reading a book except for the fact that the words are on a screen. Why waste like 130 dollars on a book on screen when you can pay like 18 dollars on a normal book. I don’t get it!! about the GPS thing phones are already have like walking GPSs and my parents have a GPS and whenever we use it to drive to the beach or something we always get confused at one point, but what can I say. The video game thing is also pretty hard to believe.

I can’t believe this, if that happens what kind of technology will we have then? I would kind of agree with Emma W. because some one the gadgets are not being used, but come on why would they do that. I use my Wii and Nintendo DS and I don’t want it to be discontinued. Hopefully in 2020 they will have something better. Allot of people will be shocked that this will happen so will I. My Mom loves her GPS because it really helps her not to get lost. Probably I should invent something similar in 2020 but i have no idea what it would be. I wish that this is not true because this is kind of breathtaking for allot of people. I would think that some of the gadgets that were about to be gone will still be there in 2020 because maybe they would be used more.

I dont really care because were still going to have them. The devices arent going to look they will probably more high-tech. I do agree that were not going to have basic phones around because more people would like a smartphone than a basic phone. Now the thing with no GPS’s I think is a fib. We should still have GPS’s for the people who still have a basic phone. It’ll probably a good thing to enhance video game systems;like he said they’ll be built into a TV. I think this is a good idea because for the people who still have the old consoles they can sell/keep them and have something valuable or money. At first when I read this I thought it was a lie. When I read the full article I sort of understood him. But if they don’t make these things better, it’ll go down in the market. Technology will never stop improving!!!!!!

I think that some of these things might be gone, but I think video game consoles will still be around. From what they said in the article, they make it seem like you can’t watch movies on a ps3. Also, xbox 360 already has a digital movie system. I think that the smartphones will probably take over the world of phones and cameras, but video games will not completley die out do to tablets. Cd’s and DVD’s will probably be gone. I don’t think that E-readers will be around because there are newer things to use.

I think you could give up some of those things like GPS because most families have a smart phone.I think the one thing my dad would not like is Cd’s because he makes music than scans it on to a CD. I would not like giving up game consoles and cameras because a lot of people have and use them.If we give up phone but I phones/smart phones I think we could because smart phones are better because they can do more.I have a Xbox and I love it because it is like a phone in some way, you can chat with friends.it would also be hard for lots of people to give up DVD players because for some people that is there TV or movie player. i don’t have a e reader but i am getting one for Christmas and i think a lot of people would not like for no more e readers to come out.

The bad part about it is that what if you just want and e reader and not all that other stuff. Plus a lot of us have spent so much money on these things and now it will all go to waste. This is kind of sad to me. I mean, I do wonder if there will be more huge companys. For example, Verizon and AT&T merged so their only competeters are now Sprint and T-Mobile. And personaly, I don’t think Sprint and them stand a chance. With two big phone companys merging (who by the way I think have the best smart phones) are going to wipe out everybody else in that buisness. Apple will take over the IPod buisness and there (hopefully will) but probably will be no E-Readers. And GPS’s are gone. My friend Micah, his phone isn’t even a smart phone and it had a GPS in it. My question, is there anything better than smartphones? If so, will smartphones be dead in the next 15-20 years?

I think this because they could be taken over easily by ipod touches or smartphones. The flip camera could go up in 2020 by alot because if you dont want your kids to have a phone or a digital camera than you can get them a flip capera.

And my mom has a GPS that goes on the window of the car. But the I phone, is cool and all that but it is to high priest. And then what new stuff is going to come out to take its place. With the apple stuff that is taking its place to.

I do think that GPS navigation systems will be gone. This is because most cars have the programmed in the car, and a lot of people have it on their phones.
It is very unlikely that DVD players, DVDs, and CDs will be gone. This is because we have used them so long and TVs can only record and hold so much. CDs is very unlikely because there are still songs you can not just get frm Ipods or record them.
We have a lot of technology now and still have not lost those things. That is why I think most of the 7 thing will still be around!

I use my camra for all my moments i want to keep for ever. i think the camra will still be useful in 2020 but there will be new ways on how a camra works. I also have a game console. I think this will not happen. People like my parents will never buy a smartphone for themselves. Once the old generation (30 yr old and up) dies, then this might happen. The new generation uses tons of smart phones, and other new technology items. Some of the parents have adapted to use them, but others haven’t. I don’t think my parents will ever use one in their lifetimes. I really do think that most of these things will still be here in 2020. I believe that some of these gadgets will still be around, but not as important. Like the I pad will replace the E-Reader with the new nook and kindle app along with all its other apps. I do think that most of these things will go out of style, but not over the course of ten years for most of these items like regular cell phones that have been around for so many years, what makes the writer of this article think that they will go out any sooner? I know that most people think that the Smart phones are better than you regular cell phone, but there are still people who just want a basic cell phone. (I think it’s crazy put it is true) Although I do agree about the regular camera going out, all of these smart phones and computers with their high definition cameras built in are a lot better. Then GPS’s, DVD’s, and VCR’s will not go out because so many people have family movies and recordings that you can only hear and see on VCR’s and DVD’s. Most of them, are pasted down to more family so that they can see. Most people would want a VCR or a DVD player for that. As for your GPS’s, If you are driving alone somewhere, you can’t pull up an app on your phone because you could put yourself in danger and that is why you would need a GPS. I for one do have a camera and I use it whenever I gout of town.

I have several of these gadgets. I have a Wii, PlayStation, a phone and an itouch. I usually use my phone and itouch about every day, but for my game consoles I really don’t play them that much. I will play my Wii every once in a while but most of the time no. I think itouches could be important for years to come but you also have to think that a lot of people have IPhones. I don’t think any of the phones most of us have will be useful in 2020 because like the article said smartphones are going to be really big in 2020. Since like normal cameras and GPS systems are going away is because those gadgets are already in some of our phones and that why we don’t need them.

I think that some gadgets will still be around but like Mr. Fiegerman said you have to think of all the stuff that keeps coming out. All the new technology that has come out this year alone is just a seventh of what it could be like in 2020. That would me if things keep coming out like they are now you would multiply all the things from this year seven times! So I think I agree with Mr. Fiegerman. My family owns a lot of the things listed in the article and we use them almost every day. I use my ordinary phone every day and I also play video game a few times a week. I use them a lot but I really think the world is making a lot of technology and I don’t think it will be the same at all. One of the reasons is that it would be cheaper to own a smartphone because you can have a GPS on it you can download movies to your phone and wirelessly play them on your TV. That will make DVD players be a lot less useful and there is a lot more you can do on a smartphone. So yes I do agree with Mr. Fiegerman about the gadgets today will not be use the same way again.

I don’t think I could live without of my xbox. It would be so boring and I wouldn’t know what to do. Getting rid of many of these would make some people happy, but it would probably make more people unhappy. E-readers are getting more popular, and if we just get rid of the them, many people will object. Video game systems are SO popular, that lots and lots of people will be mad if you get rid of them. I do think that DVD players will still be useful in 2020 because there will still be movies and TV shows that are only on DVD in 2020 that people will still want to watch. I also think that there will still be e-readers for sale in 2020 or at least there will be something like the 5th generation nook, it might not be used as only and e-reader, but i think that it will still be manufactured in 2020. i also think that the lower end cameras will still be on the market in 2020 because there are still some people who wont want to have to buy a really nice camera or they’ll want to buy a younger kid a camera that they don’t have worry about them totally messing up. I do think that some of these items like the standalone GPS or the CD’s wont be around, but that’s because they’re already starting to really be replaced by phones with a GPS built in and CD’s are being replaced by iPod’s and iTunes.

This article was very eye opening. I think cd’s for movies will still be around but not music cd’s because most people have mp3 players. I play video games often and i enjoy them. I think if they can combine the high quality of the video games into the tv i will be very happy. I agree on the gps, e reader, feature phones, and low end digital cameras. I agree on those because all those functions are on smart phones and cost less on the smart-phones. I dont agree on dvd players, dvds, and video game consoles. Netflix has a fairly low price because you dont have to pay for blu-ray dvd and video game consoles are way better than movies.

This article is a very interesting topic. Although, I agree and disagree with some of the things he said. I definitely do not think that DVD players will be gone in 2020, because those are a very common household item. I do think that things like game consoles and E-Readers will be gone though. Many things are coming out that are topping these types of items, and will eventually swipe them out. Another item that I think will still be around are non-smartphones, but they just may not be as common. I own many of these items, and I think that many of them are very useful things to have. I highly doubt that all of these items will be gone in 2020.

Gps’s will be here for a long time though and i think that they will last longer than 2020. Who knows what will happen by that time though, many things will change, get worse and get better. I am not happy about this, and I hope that none of this is right. If we have ALL advanced things in 2020 like tablets that costs hundreds of dollars each, that is bad. I feel this way, because not everyone can afford that stuff and it is just cheaper to buy the non smart phones, the game consoles, and the DVD or CD player, because they are just easier to afford. I mean is it so bad to have those things? I have a non smart phone, and yes I am getting a smartphone in December, but I still believe that it would be easier to sell both the hand held and more fancy items and the easier to use and cheaper to buy items as well. I feel that they should just sell more of the advanced things like the smart phones, but to still keep the others. It would make life easier that way 🙂

I agree that most of this is probably true, and most likely those gadgets will be nonexistent by 2020 except for game consoles and the GPS that sticks on to windshields. Game consoles will still be around because they’re so common, and you don’t always like to play it on a small phone, I like to play games on big TV’s screens, and with my friends. I play games on my phone in resterants, and in the car. As for the GPS, well some people, such as my parents, don’t really even know how to use a computer, so they don’t have Iphones, and all the new gadgets. They do things the old fashioned way, and I think the GPS will stick around because of that. My mom gets lost all the time, its her life line, and she wouldn’t know how to find the GPS on her phone. I do have a bunch of those “tech items”. I have an Ipod, a phone, a wii, a PSP, a Play station, a camera, and a laptop. I use them almost everyday. I use some of them enough to think they’ll be around in 2020, like my laptop, they will definitely have newer and more high-tech laptops, but computers, i think, will be around forever. A lot of the things will be gone by 2020, but they’re just being replaced with better versions, and different ways to use them.

I just got my Xbox 360 this year, and I’m pretty sure they are going to come up with something better than that. I just could not imagine a video game-less world. I know this sounds a little dumb, but I’m pretty sure that there are going to be people who commit suicide over that. I use my Xbox probably every two days, because I don’t have that many new games (I finish a game in a max of three days), and I don’t get everything I want like most children from today’s society. I have to actually WORK to get what I want, and even then, I might not.

If these companies are going to stop making feature phones, they need to go down on prices for the monthly contracts. These companies are going to plummet because people will quit using their phones. I am mainly talking about Verizon Wireless. Lower companies such as Sprint and T-Mobile are going to become top providers because of Verizon and AT&T’s high prices.

I honestly think replacing cameras, feature phones, and GPS’ isn’t a good idea. I think its bad, because then, people would have to buy smart phones, really high-quality cameras, and apps on smart phones to get a GPS. I can understand why they would think this kind of technology would be gone by 2020, because you can easily buy all of these things together, from a smartphone, but not everyone wants to pay that much money, plus a data plan for a phone that could easily break, or not be used very much. I can agree, with not making CD’s anymore, because I buy all my music on iTunes, but other people who don’t have Ipods, cant get music. People probably dot wanna spend like $1000 dollars, just to get a camera either. Then we wouldn’t really need photographers, because everyone can take really pretty, and high-quality pictures on there own, and edit them online. So some of these things, I can kinda understand getting rid of, but not all of them.
