Using iPod Touches in School

March 1, 2011

Tech News

Nowadays it seems that most kids have access to some sort of technology whether it be a cell phone, iPod Touch, tablet (think iPad), or computer. With unprecedented access to vast amounts of information, why is it that so many of our students are falling behind academically, especially when compared to kids in other countries such as China or India?

The question becomes should schools and teachers take advantage of the technology that kids already have access to? If so, how? What are the advantages and disadvantages to having personal cell phones, computers, and iPod Touches in the classroom?

Recently a school district in California introduced iPods to third grade classes as part of a pilot program called iTouch Learning, or iTL for short. Click here to read the article titled “Del Mar Heights school advances students’ tech education with iTouch Learning program”. Respond below with your thoughts on using this type of technology in third grade and other grade levels. Also, answer the questions in the second paragraph.

The reason that so many countrys like India and China are pulling a had with there acedemics is becausethey do not use as nearly as much tecnology than us TO LEARN and they spend more of there time at school. Even little third grades in china are streesed out at the end of the day because they learn so much more than we do in one day. Unlike us, we use tecnology for almost everything, to write, to read, and to work in the class room. so much tecnology can be destracting to some people. To be honest we should not be using computers right now because they are putting us farther and farther behind other countrys.

And if I’m in a musical I can record the dances, so i can look back at them. Many people may abuse the use of bringing an Ipod touch to school, many kids may play with it in class, at lucj, in silent lunch, and many other times they aren’t allowed to, there are both ups and downs to this. I like all the ups :))!

hi.Well, to answer these questions, i think that we should take advantage of the technology we have! i mean, i have an ipad and its VERY usefull. i even use it to help with homework. and if the whole school had ipads or ipods… think of all the homework. if it were online, it would be pretty hard to lose! I think that maybe if apple of some other companies sponsored us for the sake of learning, of held alot of fundraisers, then there would be the money! although, what if some people use the technology wrong… they could get it revoked. maybe if everyone brought in what they had, we would only have to get the people without the technology something. that chops the price down ALOT!

Using an Ipod Touch is cool and all, but I find it that using technology all the time could be pushing books out of the picture. I mean like how walking went to bike riding to cars that pollute our air to cars that don’t do as much damage to the enviorment and now theres using books to becoming using Ipod Touches.

I don’t think that we should be able to use cell phones though because all that kids would do is text if we were able to use our cell phones. If we were able to use iPod Touches, iPads, and Laptops or netbooks then I think that they should be owned by the school and only contain the apps necissary because if not then kids would become very distracted and then using iPod touches would become more distracting and less helpful.

I think that we should take the advantages of technology because without technology people would have gotten so smart. We would know lots of things. Technology is a learning device (most of the time). People make great discoveries by using techonlogy for help.

We should be able to use it in school and at home. I don’t use the computer much unless it is for research, homework, Facebook, or a School assignment.

The bad thing about having technology during school is while you tell the kids to do an assignment on a peice of technology, they may go on and just play around. If they use cellphones they may text people the anwers to assignments. Those kids who recieve the answers are not learning anything by cheating. It’s still the same for the people with out technology who cheat, they don’t learn anything.

I think that schools cant start taking advantage of this just yet, not until they know that all of the kids have access to this. But I do think that some schools should. If kids become attuned to the technology that we are being exposed to now, then they will be more comfortable with it later. Teachers should take advantage of the technology that kids have, by teaching them how much easier things are with technology, it may inspire kids to do better. Kids may enjoy this technology when using it in school. It will bring new excitement to our days. Things may not be as bland, as we think they are right now. Kids will have access to more, along with less weight on their backs each day, to and from school. And there isn’t any extra weight when you add more data onto your computer.

I think using iPod Touches, laptops, tablets, and cell phones in school is a good idea. There are many positives and negatives of this though. Some of the advantages are that students can look up information faster and more quickly and they can be more comfortable and bookmark websites or information on their own personal computer that they could look at later for homework. Some of the disadvantages would be texting, and Facebook. I’m sure that some kids wouldn’t use the technology for just research, they would probably get off task and get on other websites. I think that teachers should take advantage of the technology, since we have it, we should use it.

I also think that the advantages would be better grades and less people dropping out of schools all across the world.

Some of the disadvantages would be that some kids would get carried away with this program and overuse this item during school.

This is a great idea though i believe the only thing would be controling kids from using this as a play toy and not as an advantage to their usage.

I think the use for technology is a PRIVLAGE. I do know many people will take advantage of it, and look up innapropriate things to disrupt class. I do, however, think it is a good idea because of some people losing their documents constantly! You can keep this in one device, although it can get ruined and be defective, just as any other electronic device can. As a problem with the graphing calculators, people have taken other’s calculators and erased games and other apps. Hacking is also a problem, with any deviece, as it can be a huge problem with downloading things that are not allowed in certain cases.
I do agree, that as a group, if allowed a certain privlage, it will be used well and effectivly. For certain classes, you may need a certain app on an iPod, iPad, or some other Macintosh device.

Things like Facebook take up the time of kids causing us to fall behind. I think teachers and schools should take advantage of the technology but make sure it is being used correctly. The advantages of this technology is that we have access to information quickly and can get it almost anywhere. The disadvantages of this we are falling behind to places like China and can take up more time on all the sites on the web. Schools and teachers should definitley take advantage of technology that kids already have access to, but not necessarily through iPod Touches or iPads. While they do contain a lot of information, it’s hard to monitor what students are really doing on there. It also doesn’t teach kids to go out and look for information if they have everything they need at the swipe of a button. Instead of putting in cell phones because kids already know how to use them because it’s “easier”, we should teach alternate learning methods.

I can agree that teachers should allow itouches, laptops, and much more for the OLDER kids NOT the younger students. The reason i think this is because the younger students are more likely to play with the app’s or games while the older student’s SHOULD be more mature an use the tecnology for work. If the teacher acually did allow tecnology then they would need to be watched like the computers that are in the computer room. The advantage’s to this would being able to reasearch for big project’s online instead of large book’s. The disadvantages would be seeing all the games and not being able to play them which could be tempting to some students. Honestly it may not be the best idea to bring tecnology into class because that is what is putting our acedemic’s behind, tecnology. What do you think?

A lot of kids have cell phones and ipods and other things to contact parents or family for emergencies and if we get that taken away we won’t be able to call them. So far I only have one problem with using these things which is if someone wanted what you have they could steal it.

Would they just be their to help with technology problems? they wouldnt have to teach anything unless teaching them how to use the technhology and i don’t think thats enough because the industries want the technology to be user freindly so anyone can work it easily.. also third grade minds need to develope slowly becaus at such a young age most of them don’t know how to interperet what they are reading or doing. like my little brother he is in second grade and he is very skilled and above grade level. he rarely uses technology for homework and projects. he uses his sence of creativity which is something that technology demolishes.

I think that teachers are somewhat taking advantage of the tecnolagy that kids have now a days. The problem with having kids bring there electronices in class is cause in stead of studing they could be playing a game or looking up unimportant things on the internet. Some advantages of letting kids use tecnolaagy in school is they will be able to look things up easier. Some disadvantages for bringing your ipod.ipads.cell phones and lap tops in school is they have to much of a temtation to not do what there supose to do and do what ever they feel like doing. Also another disavantage is when the teacher is trying to teach the kids something they might be texting there friends and other people, and not learn anything. So to sum it up i think it is a awful idea to let kids bring electronices into school.

One of the advantages of having iTouches and such in class is easy, quick internet access. Computers are pretty expensive now, and iTouches only cost about $150 now, so they are easier to buy for 20 or so students rather than PCs. Also, using technology and electronics that kids are used to is more motivating and fun than doing a worksheet. This has been witnessed in the Del Mar Heights school with third graders. I’m sure there are lots of apps that can be used to teach children now. One huge disadvantage and risk is that kids are going to be kids and they are going to want to play other games and explore. They are going to get distracted and off task. Another disadvantage is that electronics are easily broken and damaged, so it would probably cost a lot to get them repaired.

The kids in that school are pretty young so if they can improve there reading faster then they could with a work sheet then shouldnt that tell people something? I don’t like the fact that third garders get to use iPads and iTouchs because middle and high school students would be able to use it more then elementery students. I would test it out on middle schoolers first before anyother grade level. It would be easier to have the program nation wide to see how students around the nation in different envirnment to see how they would use it in their class time. This is a way to get students more involve in school and class work. If it is going to be a problem in school the devices should not be used in school.

I disagree with having itouches in class. Kids would get easily distracted because of it. Grades would go down a lot because their mind isnt on school work. I could maybe see elementary kids using them in class because they wouldnt know what to do with it and they wouldnt be easily distracted. With middle schoolers their brains are on other things because they are older and have all these technology devices. Using itouches in elementary schools I agree with, but in other grade levels I really dont.

I think technology is very good for learning and understanding. Nowadays lots of kids would rather be on an ipod then lookin through a dictionary to find a word, when there is a dictionary app u just type in the word and it finds it. It takes up ALOT less paper and time!! So i think if we can afford it that it would be a great addition to our school. I think most kids would be more positve towards school if they had things like ipod and ipads to work on.

This is a really cool website but it has some flaws to it. First of all the kids will always find a way to go into the internet or use an app they like and use it instead of doing the assignments assigned. Second of all they could drop the iTouchs and break it and then the family of the clumsy kid will have to pay for it. Last the kid will become too dependent on technology so when the internet shuts down for some apparent reason, they can still use the strategies we used. It’s a cool concept though because the kids can learn how to use our technology instead of using books and paper that we had to use which we don’t exactly like.

I think that this idea of using ipods in class is a good idea but kind of a bad idea also. If the kids had to buy the ipod some kids may not be able to afford one or may not have one. That wouldnt be fair to those students that didnt have an ipod not to be able to use one or learn the same way as everyone else just because they couldnt afford it. Some parents may not want there kids to be associated with an ipod or that kinds of technology. If the school provides the ipods then sure go for it but dont expect every kid to be able to learn better by using some little device that they might not know how to work. Technology has come a long way but some parents of kids may not want there kids to be exposed to these kinds of things.

I think that using I-pods for education is a good idea, at some points. For reading I think that they should have a reading app, where it reads the book to you becuse some people have a hard time reading to theirself. For math I think it would be good becuase there is a caculator you can download and so then they wont have as much stuff to keep up with. Also I am sure there is a math skills app. For science they could download a science textbook and then the teachers do no need to buy those., same for Social Studies.
I can see why they trust the third-graders. They trust them becuase they are younger and they know that if they steel them they will get in trouble. None of the third-graders, I dont think, will want to et in trouble. I also understand why they do not trust older grades too.
But i think if they do not trust the older grades they could get them mounted onto the tables. Or they could give each i-pod a number and then assign a number to each child and write down who has each number. Then you will know who broke, stole, or did something to that i-pod.

What do you think? Please Comment!(:

Having itouches in the school for students to use for educational reasons is a great idea, but it also has its down sides. Say a teacher gives his/her students an assignment. The students go stright to their Itouches and get to work;but that one student goes off of task and starts watching Lamas in Hats or Charlie the Unicorn. By time to turn in the assignment he/she only has half on it done then he/she fails the assignment.

Such as them maybe downloading games that cost even more extra money for the school, but with them being so young they wouldn’t really know that it cost more money. Also maybe they will be playing games while they are supposed to be doing thier work, Some of them would not know how to take care of the ipods and break them, then not everone in the class could have one. Could some of these kids do better with books, pencils, and paper than on screens? Like Sam J., I wonder if these iPods are worth the money they cost. There are also advantages. Kids probably enjoy using iPods, and this helps them stay focused. I’m sure teachers enjoy the silence that comes with the students’ total concentration.

I love my itouch, but I can’t see it being used in a school class, especially with the small screen and how much energy it uses to look up something on the Internet. I think that we just need to stick with this style of learning until we can find a more durable and different way to bringing technology into classes. Another thing is how much money they cost. An advantage for having the new technology in the classroom would be that maybe it would work with our school that every class that has it will be silently learning and using the new things that we learned in our every day life. Like I said before, kids could use the ipods or computers for other uses that is not school related behind the teachers back and have free time during school. A good way to get the technology in schools would be to have some scientist test out if it is better having the ipods in school by placing two kids, who usually do not pay attention in school in a room. One child would have an ipod with a worksheet or assinment on it and the other would have the same assingment but on paper. I actually think third graders are immature because I know a girl who was using her Mom’s iPhone, went onto the app stre and bought an app that costs $345.00. So you are right that they definintley would do all of those things. I can NOT trust them. I would try it on 9th grade and up. I honestly don’t think even we are mature enough for that.

I thought that this was an interesting new idea. One of the only problems I see is that the schools would have to purchase 600 hundred ipod touches. Let’s say that each ipod touch cost $200 dollars, that would be 120,000 dollars. My math might be off but that’s still pretty expensive! Then every year, the school would have to buy a hundred new ipod touches. If they wanted to cut expences they could start a hand-me- down program for the new fourth graders each year.

The article said that in the class room you could hear a pin drop and they would barely notice a visitor . I think if they had been doing schoolwork on a peice of paper they have been loud .But if the were doing school work on an ipad would they have still been loud. I mean your still writing only with your with your finger on a peice of transparent glass.

I think it is cool to use itouches inschool, but there is a disadvantage to it. We would have to raise a lot of money in ordr to afford all those itouches. Also kids could just be playing on the itouch instead of doing there work, it’s really easy to download apps. One other thing is kids could break tham and then they wouldn’t have one anymore. There for they would have to raise about two hundred dollars to buy a new one. What happens if they cant afford that and the school doesn’t want to pay for it? What are they going to do while the rest of the class is on there itouches. I don’t think it is a good idea to have those in school. There are too many bad things that kids could do with them.

Yeah. I agree with youu. we would have to have like a lot of fundraisers to be able to afford 500 ipod touches.

I see. So this is what happens when kids get “soaked” into tecnolagy. So if this is happining to other schools I think that we should do the same. These kids are learning alot! I think some of us may work better and be more succsessful if they learn like this. I still think it would be nice if the teachers provided us with these things and let us keep them like they really were ours. Espeshally because some kids (incloding me D: to) Don’t have these things yet. Or just not at all. Would we learn better this way? Would we learn better if we were reworded with ice cream and popcicles at the end of the day? Would we learn better if we had acsess to chat rooms at school? I don’t know.

I think that having itouches is really cool. I wish that they had this program here at Voyager. I do have a couple of questions though. How does it save paper. Like what can you do on the itouches that you also can do on paper. Do the children take them home(the itouches). How did they get this program to come? Like did someone tell them about it or did they just think of it? It seems really cool to have itouches at school. How do the use it in art? That is one of my main questions. Do the have like an art tool? How did they afford all of those itouches? I bet if we had it here at Voyager people will never get study hall and always do there work. It is also possible that people could be playing games on the itouches and not doing thier work.

Everything has ups and downs. Two ups are: iPods are alot faster than regular comouters, they also have education apps.
    Some downs are:
They might download apps that are games and play them during class.
If they wanted music to listen to while they are working who would pay for it?
And if they had cell phones out they might SMS there friends rather than doing more important stuff.

I think Voyager should do this same thing bcuz it is a reative way of learninig and thats what this whole school is about. It would not cost that much bcuz most kids already have an ipod. i think the kids at the school in Californa are really happy with the schools idea.

yes, but since those kids have ipods it means that they can play all the apps that are downlosded onto there ipods. Also even if kids have itouches it will still cost alot of money because itoches are like two hundred dollars each.

this is so cool i really like this idea i would WANT to stay in school all day with that i didnt even know that they had all those learning apps.the kids seem to be really into the idea to “you could hear a pin drop”. i think that more schools should do this like the student said it saves alot of paper and thats inmortant with all the devolomment buliding going on we need to save trees. If everyone swiches to the itouchs think what paper it would save not needing news papers any more. i love the itl plan.

I think that is a cool wway to learn. I’m sure kids will agree with me, that we would “hate school”, or think it’s so boring and that it’s the last place we want to be. The advantages are learning and having fun at the same time, being able focus, and teaching other friends, and being able to discuss it with them easily. On the other hand, the disadvantages are not being focused, listening to music, and running out the battery to fast. But, I really do think is a good idea. I would love our school to do this.

Wow, that is amazing. Why would they give ipods to third graders though? That i don’t get. The child could lose it or they could drop it somewhere.
What i can see is why they would want to use Ipods to teach the children. It can do alot of things, it has a clock a calculator, you can get alot of educational apps, one is called Super Why’s ABC’s . It would ne a bad thing to do because they would get used to having the Ipods and when they go to 4th grade they will always be asking “Can i have my Ipod?”

Schools should use that money to pay teachers, not provide technology that doesn’t even really help kids learn any better than without.

      • mscomputerteacher Says:

Austin, that’s a great point of view! I believe you’re the first student to say that. I’d be up for a pay raise, but also think at least some kids could learn more with the iPod Touch or similar device than without. It really depends on the student. Thanks for supporting your teachers!

        Hi Anna,

I don’t think the kids get to keep them from year to year. I think they will be reserved for the new third grade class each year. As far as inappropriate apps go, I doubt they put any on the iTouches to begin with since they technically belonged to the school.

It’s the fact that they live in a different place than us, and poeple think differently. That teacher had to work hard tto come up with this. It takes straegy. Also, it cost alot of money forus, and we don’t have all we need.

I think the advantages of having your cell at school is that you do not have to waste five minutes logging on to your computer, but go to safari on your iPhone and looking it up in less then one minute! Also they can get eduacational apps on their phones. It will also make the kids really happy because once their parents find out that phones are eduacational, they will definintley buy one for them. I have had my phone for a few moths and on the app store they do have alot of eduacational apps, not that i have ever bought one. They can also take pictures on feild trips and things in photography class or something. I dont see anty disadvantages here.
